Center extends sugar subsidy for AAY families by two years; 1.89 crores for the benefit of the family.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narender Modi approved the extension of the Antyodya Anna Yojna (AAY) family sugar subsidy scheme distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) for two years till March 31, 2026.

The scheme facilitates access. to sugar for the poorest and adds energy to their diet. Under the scheme, the Center provides a subsidy of ₹ 18.50 per kg of sugar per month to AAY families in participating states. The approval is expected to increase the allowances by more than ₹ 1,850 crore during the 15th Finance Commission (2020-25-26). About 1.89 million AAY families in the country are expected to benefit from the scheme.

The Center is already providing free ration under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna (PM-GKAY). The sale of “Bharat Atta”, “Bharat Dal” and tomatoes and onions at fair and reasonable prices are measures to ensure adequate food for the citizens of Plate of Citizen outside PM-GKAY as well. About three lakh tonnes of Bharat Dal (Chana dal) and about 2.4 lakh tonnes of Bharat Atta have already been sold so far, benefiting the frequent consumers. Thus, the availability of subsidized dal, atta and sugar supplemented the diet of the common Indian citizen, fulfilling Modi ki’s guarantee of “food for all, nutrition for all, an official statement said.

With this approval, the government will continue to provide subsidies to participating states for distribution of sugar to AAY families through PDS at one kilogram per family per month. States are responsible for the procurement and marketing of sugar.
