The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Amazon Kisan to combine their respective strengths and create a mutually beneficial partnership in guiding farmers on scientific crop cultivation techniques, optimizing yield and income. The main goal of this collaboration is to achieve optimum yield and income for farmers and to see happiness on their face.
ICAR will provide technological support to farmers through Amazon’s network, thereby improving livelihoods and boosting crop yields. This partnership, formed under the farmer’s partnership with Amazon Kisan program, aims to ensure access to high-quality fresh produce for consumers across India, including through Amazon Fresh.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary DARE & Director General of ICAR, emphasized the significance of secondary agriculture in improving farmers’ remuneration. He highlighted the crucial role of inputs in agriculture and the importance of season-based crop planning. Dr. Pathak stated that ICAR would collaborate with Amazon to provide technologies, capacity building, and transfer of new knowledge.
The MoU was signed by Dr. US Gautam, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension) on behalf of ICAR and Mr. Sidhartha Tata, Senior Product Leader from Amazon Fresh Supply Chain & Kisan.
The successful pilot project in Pune between ICAR-KVK and Amazon has spurred the collaboration’s expansion. Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVKs) will be instrumental in empowering more farmers by leveraging technology through technology transfer and capacity building programs. ICAR and Amazon will collaborate on farmer engagement initiatives at KVKs, including demonstrations, trials, and capacity-building activities to improve farming practices and profitability. Amazon will also provide training and marketing support through its online platform, connecting farmers directly with consumers.
