Karnataka partners with Coffee Board to train 1 million women entrepreneurs.

Karnataka plans to train one million women members of self-help groups (SHGs) in the state as coffee entrepreneurs in collaboration with the Coffee Board. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made the announcement while presenting his 15th budget on Friday. “In addition, 2,500 coffee stalls will be set up exclusively run by women’s SHGs at a cost of Rs 25 crore” Siddaramiah said.

Karnataka is the largest producer of coffee, accounting for more than 70 percent of the country’s total . production 3.5 million tons. Coffee is grown in Karnataka on more than 2.46 million hectares, which is more than half of the country’s total area. There are more than two thousand coffee growers in the state and most of them are small farmers, according to farmers’ associations. According to the Coffee Board, the average daily employment in coffee plantations crosses the 5.19 lakh mark. Coffee Board CEO and Secretary K G Jagadeesha said the board regularly holds discussions with the National Rural Livelihood Mission to create women entrepreneurs in coffee. With the official announcement of the 2024-2025 state budget on Friday, the initiative will be postponed until next year.
