The Center is considering imposing a stock limit on sugar wholesalers and the maximum quantity they can keep at a time to control the price. The last population limit was imposed in 2016 due to drought in the previous two years. The food minister is believed to have conveyed to the sugar mills the government’s displeasure over the recent hike in prices following the hike in mills. However, the factories offered a larger domestic quota. Here, several options are available to the government, including a mandate that each factory sell a certain amount each week and repay the government. In addition, sugar factories could have a fixed maximum selling price that matches the minimum selling price. However, these are exceptional control measures that the government does not want to take.
