National Farmers Day. The need for digitization of Indian agriculture for increased productivity and sustainability

In recent years, the Indian agricultural sector has undergone significant transformation, facilitated by the integration of technological advances. The need for digitization of Indian agriculture is being emphasized like never before with the overall objective of increasing productivity and ensuring sustainability in the face of changing challenges. This change in approach is not only necessary but also an important step towards a future where technology acts as a catalyst for agricultural growth. The inclusion of digital technologies in agriculture, often referred to as digitization, has emerged as a transformative force that can significantly increase agricultural productivity. Niti Aayog said in the AI ​​study that to maintain the annual growth rate of 8-10 percent, agriculture needs to expand by at least 4 percent. It predicted that  AI in agriculture will be worth $2.6 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.5 percent. Today, technology helps farmers increase yields by helping them choose better plants, hybrid seeds and resource-efficient farming techniques. 

 Indeed, around the world, agricultural innovators are embracing the transformative potential of digital technologies to increase efficiency throughout the  food supply chain. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a major player in this movement, having carefully produced the e-Agriculture Strategy Guide, a repository of knowledge for countries seeking to develop their own unique e-Agriculture strategies and master plans. This guide reflects the  strategic vision of FAO and serves as a guiding sign to guide countries towards a holistic approach that seamlessly integrates technology to optimize all aspects of agricultural processes – from production and distribution to communication. At a time when the world is increasingly realizing the disruptive impact of digitization on agriculture, the FAO Guide plays a central role as an important compass guiding stakeholders through a dynamic and evolving landscape of opportunities. It not only facilitates the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, but also promotes sustainable practices, contributing to the cultivation of a more efficient, sustainable and technologically advanced global food system.

The adoption of precision agriculture in the Indian context is crucial due to the fragmentation of farms and the diversity of crops in the country. The emergence of affordable technologies, such as affordable smart phones, and the declines in the price of technological interventions allow this required adaptation.

  Digital tools provide farmers with access to vast amounts of data related to weather conditions, soil health and market trends. By analyzing this data, farmers can make informed decisions about planting, harvesting and marketing their produce. Predictive analytics can also help farmers anticipate problems and take proactive measures.  Intelligent irrigation systems  Digitalization enables the introduction of intelligent irrigation systems that monitor soil moisture  and weather conditions in real time. By automating irrigation processes, farmers can ensure optimal water use, reduce water waste and minimize crop losses caused by drought or overwatering.
