Prime Minister announces establishment of National Turmeric Committee

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the formation of the National Turmeric Council, fulfilling a long-standing demand from industry players. Today I am announcing an important decision regarding this (turmeric) from the country of Telangana. Considering the needs and prospects of turmeric farmers, the Center has decided to set up a National Turmeric Council for their benefit, Modi said after laying the foundation stone of various projects in Mahabubnagar in Telangana. Hemant Patil, the Lok Sabha member from Hingoli constituency in Maharashtra, said at the World Turmeric Conference 2023  in Mumbai on September 27 that efforts have been made to provide advice on turmeric for many years.   Maharashtra application Contacted after the Prime Minister’s announcement, he welcomed the decision and called for the establishment of a board in Hingoli. Maharashtra is leading the way in terms of demand for turmeric boards, having been one of the largest producers of the golden spice in recent years. In his speech, Modi said that the National Turmeric Board will support farmers in all sectors, from value addition in the supply chain sector to infrastructure works.   Impact of Covid  Stressing that the country is a major producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric, he said that awareness about the benefits of turmeric has increased following the Covid-19 pandemic. The demand for spices has also increased worldwide. “Today it is important that the entire turmeric value chain, from production to export and research, receives more professional attention; and it is necessary to take the initiative in this regard,” the Prime Minister said, noting the importance of the  message. India produces nearly 1.1 million tonnes of turmeric, which is 80% of global production. Turmeric exports currently stand at around 1.5 lakh tonnes and stocks are increasing post the pandemic.
