The challenge of managing the intense pressure of pulses during rabi season.

Pulses have become a big issue in this year’s Kharif season. “The main problem in pulse cultivation this year is poor coverage, exacerbated by inadequate monsoon rains in the main growing regions of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra”.

Other concerns

  1. Lower rainfall, less availability of water in Myanmar, one of the major supplier of tur and urad to india
  2. Mozambique fixing a minimum exports price for tur exports
  3. Efforts to import lentils delayed as the center finds the pulses priced higher

Government’s efforts to boost output

  • Implementation of National Food Security Mission-Pulses to increase area and productivity
  • Financial assistance to farmers through States under NFSM-Pulses for cluster demonstrations on cropping system, seed production, plant protection measures and nutrient management
  • Distribution of minikits of newer varieties of pulses seeds free of cost
  • Over 8,600 tonnes of breeder seeds produced against a demand of 6,850 tonnes between 2018-19 and 2022-23
  • Creation of pulses buffer stocks under price stabilization fund
