The Tea Board funds STG’s capacity building training.

The Tea Board funds skills training for small-scale tea growers (STG) across the country, whose production volumes exceed more than 50 percent of total production annually. The Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers Associations (CISTA) said the capacity building training program will also cover food safety, use of banned chemicals, use of pesticides and adoption of Plant Protection Regulations (PPC). In Assam, the program is being implemented at 13 locations including Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar, four locations in West Bengal and two locations in Tamil Nadu.

In 2022, a total of about 1350 million kilograms of tea was produced, of which 52 percent came from STG. CISTA also submitted an STG status report to the Commerce Department, requesting assistance in realizing economies of scale through clustering. The association also stated that STGs do not receive a remunerative price for the green leaves they produce.
